Gene D. Mahaney, M.D.

Dr. Mahaney completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He earned a Doctor of Medicine in 1993 at Albany Medical College in Albany, N.Y., and completed his Internal Medicine Internship at Albany Medical Center. After moving to Boston, Dr. Mahaney completed his Residency in Anesthesiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Medical School. He completed his Fellowship in Pain Management at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center in Charlottesville, Va. In 1999, Dr. Mahaney came to Fort Myers and became Medical Director of the Pain Management Clinics for Lee Memorial Health System.

He is Board Certified in Anesthesiology and Pain Management by the American Board of Anesthesiology, and is a member of a number of professional organizations.


Velimir A. Micovic, M.D.

Dr. Micovic received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical School of the University of Rijeka in Croatia, and completed his Internship and Residency in Emergency Medicine and Surgery at University Hospital in Rijeka. From 1989 to 1995, he was Research Associate at The Hospital for Sick Children at the University of Toronto. He completed an Internal Medicine Internship, Residency in Anesthesiology and Pain Management Fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. Dr. Micovic came to Fort Myers in 2000 to practice Anesthesiology and Pain Management at Lee Memorial Health System facilities.

He is Board Certified in Anesthesiology and Pain Management by the American Board of Anesthesiology, and is a member of a number of professional organizations.


Gilberto Acosta, M.D., M.P.H.

Dr. Acosta received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., and a Doctor of Medicine and a Masters Degree in Public Health from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. In 1992 he completed his Internship at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, N.Y, and then went on to complete his Residency in Anesthesiology at New York University Medical Center.

While serving in the armed forces in South Carolina in 1995, Dr. Acosta was assigned as a Staff Anesthesiologist at Naval Hospital Charleston. He completed his Pain Management Fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina, then moved to Fort Myers in 2000 to practice at Lee Memorial Health System facilities.

He is Board Certified in Anesthesiology and Pain Management by the American Board of Anesthesiology, and is a member of a number of professional organizations.


Adam Shuster, D.O.
Pain Management Consultants

Dr. Shuster received his undergraduate degree in psychology in 2000 and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree in 2004 from Michigan State University. He completed his Internal Medicine / Osteopathic Internship at Providence Hospital and Medical Center in Southfield, Mich. He completed Residency Training in Anesthesiology and later was a Staff Anesthesiologist at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit. He completed a Fellowship in Pain Management there as well.

Dr. Shuster’s main focus at Florida Pain Centers is managing acute, chronic and cancer-related pain with a special interest in neuromodulation. He has co-authored several articles in professional publications.  He is Board Certified in Anesthesiology and Pain Management by the American Board of Anesthesiology,and is a member of a number of professional organizations.


Maria A. DeLaPeña, M.D.

Dr. DeLaPeña received her undergraduate degree from Colegio Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo in Barranquilla, Colombia, and her medical doctor degree from Universidad del Norte at the Colombia School of Medicine, also in Barranquilla.

In 2003, she completed her internship at the Hospital Militar Central, one of the largest medical facilities in Colombia. Following that, Dr. DeLaPeña completed post-graduate year-one general surgery and clinical anesthesia both at the University of Miami-Miller School of Medicine and DeWitt Daughtry Family Department of Surgery. She then received an Interventional Pain Management Fellow (Post-Graduate Five) at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, in 2013.

Dr. DeLaPeña holds Florida and Massachusetts Medical Licenses and is board-certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology. She is a member of the American Society of Regional Anesthesia (ASRA) and the American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA).


Brenda Listowski, ARNP, FNP-BC
Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner
Pain Management Consultants

Ms. Listowski received a Bachelor of Science in Health Care Administration at St. Joseph College in Windham, Maine, and in 2000 completed a Master of Science in Health Care Administration there as well. In 2006, she earned a Master of Science in Nursing with a major in Primary Health Care from Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Fla. She is an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner at Pain Management Consultants, and a nationally board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner.

Brenda’s nursing career began in 1995. She has held a variety of care and management positions including those with pain management firms, spine specialists, internal medicine, Florida Easter Seal Society and the state of Florida. She is also a board-certified family nurse practitioner, and is involved in a number of professional nursing organizations and activities.
